## Changes and cancellations

Companies often announce a dividend more than once. The DRP price usually comes after the pricing period ends, and dividends get corrected or cancelled after they're announced. Each change updates the same dividend, so you get one record per dividend with the latest numbers, and its status only moves forward from announced to confirmed to paid.

We work out the franking credit from the franked amount and the company's tax rate, the way the ATO does: franked amount × rate ÷ (1 − rate). A fully franked 70 cent dividend at 30% carries a 30 cent credit.

## Franked at 25% or 30%

Not every company franks at 30%. A base rate entity, which is a company with turnover under $50 million and no more than 80% passive income, franks at 25% from the 2021-22 income year, 26% in 2020-21 and 27.5% from 2017-18 to 2019-20\. The rate depends on the company's previous year, so it can change from one year to the next.

A fully franked 70 cent dividend at 25% carries a credit of 23.33 cents, not 30\. Tools that assume 30% overstate it, so we use the rate the company declared. When a form gives no rate, `frankingCredit` is null. The ATO explains the calculation in [allocating franking credits](https://www.ato.gov.au/businesses-and-organisations/corporate-tax-measures-and-assurance/imputation/paying-dividends-and-other-distributions/allocating-franking-credits).

## Questions

Yes. It returns dividends for listings on any exchange we cover, like NASDAQ:AAPL. The au object with the franking fields is only on ASX dividends.

To dividends with an ex date from 1 September 2015, for ASX companies and funds. For some funds, like Vanguard's ETFs from 2017, the franking credit and DRP price are there but the franked percentage and tax rate are null.

Either the company didn't state a tax rate, or it's an estimated dividend whose numbers don't add up yet. We'd rather leave it null than assume 30% and get it wrong.

When the company announces it, which is usually after the DRP pricing period ends, often days after the ex date. Until then drp.price is null.

The update corrects the same dividend, so you never get two versions of it. A cancellation sets status to cancelled. Status only moves forward, so a notice that arrives late or out of order can't undo a newer one.

They're the figures the company declared. The ATO pre-fills returns from the statements share registries send out, so if the two ever differ, go with your statement.

1 credit per instrument. It's included in every plan, Free included, and in the trial. Anything that comes back as an error isn't billed.
